I had to complete "The Paths We Walk" offered by the House Fortemps Manservant. When I accepted the quest from him, the minimap showed the option to challenge him, but he did not have the challenge symbol above his head in game. It was odd. Once I completed the quest, I was able to challenge. Also note that he is most likely inside the manor, not outside in The Pillars as indicated

Can confirm, contrary to what I read in the comment section here, I did need to complete "The Paths we Walk" or at the very least progress in it. I have completed all MSQ quests up to the end of 6.0, so I am most certainly far beyond "Heavensward". I couldn't challenge this NPC without accepting the quest and finishing it. Hopefully this helps.

Oh and if you start first, placing Ysale top Left seems to trigger him to place his Hauch bottom right anyways, so you can do the same thing.

When he plays first, he will always (?) place Hauchefant Bottom-right. I placed the Darkscale Dragon in the middle, which prompted him to place Edmont de Fortemps Top middle. You can then use Asahi sas Brutus (if you've done most of the msq) to Plus from the bottom middle. He will then place another card top left. Be careful though because if you take this card, he will place another card bottom left which can trigger a plus which will wipe the board. i found placing a card with a 1 at the bottom stopped this as even though that card is recaptured you still win.

I drew the first game and won the rest. I won Artoirel on the 1st, 11th, 13th and 21st win, Emmanellain on the 12th and 22nd. I got Honroit on the 23rd.
